good morning. the signal came just an hour ago. no decision on a pope over night but the voting is not over for the day just yet. we are live at the marin county-sonoma county line where a fatal accident has just happened. and the threatening message found inside an east bay school

well in most areas around the bay as we look at the sunol grade the traffic looks gad. there is a very serious accident at the marin-sonoma county line. and some of the fog will be thick in some of these areas. you can also see road work in san francisco along northbound 101 approaching the 80 split. it is 4:29. let's go back to the desk. we begin this morning with breaking news from the vatican. a new pope was not chosen this morning. we will take you live to st. peters square although it has been raining, large crowds have been spending hours waiting for some kind of signal there. now about 50 minutes ago black smoke came from the chimney of the sistine chapel. none of the 115 cardinals received the two-thirds vote necessary to become pontiff at this point. the ballots were burned together after two rounds of

voting. the cardinals will continue their deliberations and continue voting today. coming up we will go to rome for a live report of day two of the papal conclave. con to developing news in the north bay. a fatal crash has shut down one lane of highway 101 south to petaluma. tara moriarty is live near the marin-sonoma border county line. >> reporter: the driver of the truck that crashed has died. behind me you can see it's down there in the ditch. it's difficult to see the actual vehicle. we are waiting for the coroner to identify her so her family can be properly notified first and the coroner just arrived in the past five minutes. the chp says around 2:15 this morning they received a 911 call from a passenger inside that car who had been injured. we are just north of novato, south of petaluma on a very dangerous stretch of roadway.

the woman was driving northbound on 101 when she drifted into the center divider for some reason. >> she may have drifted off the roadway in an attempt to over correct causing the vehicle to over tush and into the drainage ditch. we don't know if alcohol was a factor if she had fallen asleep. >> reporter: the woman was pronounced dead on the scene. we understand she is 31 years old. out of petaluma. three other passengers were in the vehicle they received major injuries. we have no update on their conditions but we will work on getting that for you. the coroner has just arrived and coming up we'll tell you why accidents like this are really not uncommon in this particular stretch from the novato narrows on up to the county line. right now you can see the firefighters are here on scene. they will help extra date the body. after the coroner has taken the

proper evidence. we are live at the county line i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. pleasanton foothill high school is under tighter security this morning after a threatening message was scrawled in the girl's restroom. the graffiti was discovered yesterday afternoon. it's written in black marker and claims to hate everyone at the school. the message threatens to shoot everyone tomorrow. principal e-mailed an alert to students families. now it reads in part the graffiti has been photographed by student and posted on social media so there are rumors circulating. appropriate precautions are being taken to insure a safe and secure campus for all students including additional police presence for the remainder of the week. a pleasanton preschool is hoping to rebuild trust with parents after a teacher allegedly bound a two-year-old with if masking tape. >> everyone is upset.

>> more than 100 frustrated parents attended a closed door meeting at center cut preschool. 24-year-old angela taped a toddlers wrist and ankles after she refused to take a nap. she resigned back in january and since then six preschoolteachers have resigned. center point is working to revamp its program. a teacher has been alleged for allegedly drugging her students. she's accused of crushing up a substance and pouring it into children's drinking cups. san francisco's district attorney is pushing the cell phone industry to change how it deals with stolen phones. he wants cell phone companies to disable phones that have been stolen. it's a program that is already in place in other countries including australia. right now about half the robberies in san francisco

involve cell phones. a sacramento couple is being charged with running an international smart phone trafficking ring. the 39-year-old man and his wife are accused of collecting hundredsover smart phones from across the country -- hundreds of smart phones from across the country and selling them for $2,000 each. they alleged made $4 million from the scam in eight months. later today president obama will meet with ceo's from major companies to get their input on how the government and private sector can both work together to improve cyber security. this follows a warning by the director of national intelligence that cyber attacks now pose more of a threat to the u.s. than a terrorist attack. james delivered the worldwide threat assessment yesterday. he says north korea's development of a nuclear is weapons program poses a threat to the u.s. as well.

it's also an indicator of the governments attitude and spend. the wait is nearly over for drivers. cal tran announced the highway 1 twin doubles a double slide will finally open on march 25th. that is just 12 days from now. this will be california's first highway tunnel in nearly 50 years and it's great news for drivers that have been forced to use a dangerous two lane road to get to pacifica and half-moon bay. time is 4:35. let's see how the roadways are looking. hopefully it's nice out there. >> yeah. for the most part. you saw tara talking about that fatal crash on northbound 101. that is the noncommute direction and it's nice and early. so at the very least we will not have a huge backup that that area. let's take a look at the traffic on the east shore freeway, it will be foggy. very foggy in many areas.

just give yourself plenty of extra time this morning as you drive through. you can barely see the east shore freeway because of the thick fog. also the morning commute is going to be nice here as you drive through. there are no major problems. i want to put something on the maps for you if i can. if the guys can bring up my maps. i want to remind you we do have the fatal accident at the marin- sonoma county line in the northbound direction. southbound traffic not effected, however. if it stays out there for any link of time it may effect the morning commute in the southbound direction. we'll keep you posted. at 4:36 let's go to mark. good morning, to you, sal. the fog the biggest challenge. it is floating around near the coast and parts of the bay. that will impact your visibility. cool temperatures on the cool side. santa rosa 33 degrees.

fog right foul hugging parts of the coastline. as you can see toward richmond and berkeley, the fog a big factor here. be extra careful. especially now between 6:00 and 7:00. what's happens we had this layer of warm air up above us. as it compresses it, it makes it really dense. the short term clearing back to the shoreline. that warm air you will feel it later on today. for the coast not so much. dense fog this morning. temperatures 45-60-degrees. upper 50s to lower 60s. still patchy fog nearby. around the bay we will clear things out. 68 to 73 and the inland spots look at this the warmest locations approaching the 80- degree mark. 77 to 80 degrees by 3:00 this afternoon. here's a look at the forecasted

good wednesday morning. time now 4:43. look at our forecast highs ranging from the lower 60s out to the immediate coast. warmest locations approaching the 80-degree mark. in the louisiana bayou four people were injured when a fire exploded. the tug boat was pushing an oil barge in a bayou 30 miles south of new orleans last night. both vessels were engulfed in flames when the boat struck the barge line. boeing can go ahead with the redesigns. all boeing 787 that have been in service around the world have been grounded since january. that is after a battery fire forced an emergency landing.

it will make changes to provide better ventilation of the batteries. but they say more tests must be conducted. berkeley police report no arrests after a march to protest the death of a transgender woman. the night about 75 demonstrators marched to police headquarters. it was a month ago police responded to a disturbance. the individual was described as a 347-pound schizophrenic who died from some violent confrontation. >> our detectives are working on the case and waiting on the results from the coroner. >> even some demonstrators

rushed at a ktvu news camera. 37-year-old chow says police released a photo of him last year identifying him as a possible gang member wanted in connection with a shooting. he claims he's had trouble finding work ever since. he's now seeking compensation from the city. city attorney has not commented on the suit. a 24-year-old woman has been arrested accused of kicking a toddler at a playground in san francisco golden gate park. sabrina bell kicked the girl in the chest on monday. she also threatened to kill other children at the playground before running away. police eventually arrested bell not far from the park. the little girl suffered minor bumps and bruises and did not need to two to the hospital. a teacher has been arrested for allegedly lacing toddlers drinks with sleeping pills. debra is charged with felony child endangerment. she worked at kiddie academy.

grass reportedly admitted it was sominex an over the counter sleep aid. the parents are upset. >> you don't know how long it's been going on. you don't know if your child has been effected. >> in a statement they say ms. gratz was terminated immediately for her actions and looking into the case. a sexual battery report has students on edge and police asking for the public's help. it happened in the shower stall of the wellness center at city college of san francisco. just after noon on saturday a female student was showering when she felt someone grab her from behind. the woman fought off the attacker. students are now on heightened alert. >> i carry pepper spray and i always try to walk with people, but sometimes i'm alone. so i don't know you just have to be aware always. >> police describe the suspect as a black man with light brown

skin between 25-30 years old. about six feet tall 185 pounds. he was last seen wearing basketball shorts and black shoes. if anyone has any information they are asked to contact police. the america's cup race is no longer expected to give bay area economy a half billion boost. however that same report shows it will cost the city substantially less to host the big sailing event. this morning the streets of palo alto are clear that is after serving as a backdrop for a television show. they were shooting a pilot for the hbo show culled silicon valley. it features six young people living in palo alto and working to become millionaires. the camera, lights, and cables blocked some traffic. but many say it was exciting to

have hollywood come to the area. >> all right. time is 4:48. we have the fog out there. we also have southbound 101 near petaluma as well. sal, how is it look something >> it's doing pretty well but the fog you mentioned is going to be a problem for some because it is pretty thick. let's go outside and show you the traffic. we normally see this wide caning east shore. we are down to a few cars disappearing into the clouds here on 80. that is what the thick fog is doing. it's pretty low visibility in some areas. you might want to allow extra time for your commute. also the morning commute is going to be okay westbound bay bridge coming up to the toll plaza but you can see the fog is moving through. and once again we are are talking about the south bay and we're off to a good start on northbound 280 getting up to highway 17. i also want to mention northbound 101 the marin county

line. there is a fatal accident northbound 101. southbound 101 the traffic is not effected just yet. 4:49 let's go to mark. good morning, to you. yeah the fog the biggest challenge the biggest obstacle. but into the afternoon hours we will warm up those numbers. especially inland. tomorrow a little bit cooler. it will be a little dry with the sun cloud mix. as far as temperatures we do have the 40s. up in santa rosa and napa and novato 39. oakland 50 degrees and hayward reporting 50. as far as the fog there is a factor to the immediate shoreline. santa rosa reporting dense fog and also really thick patches. the fog basically shoots right on to the golden gate bridge. berkeley is basically a magnet for the fog. that is why you see all the fog this morning. that will be somewhat of a concern. short term dense fog for coast and bay. clearing skies near the shoreline into the afternoon hours. warmest locations will be

approaching the 80-degree mark. storm track heads way up to the north for now as high pressure is still in command of our weather. the sinking air that is warming air and one of the warmest days of the week. we still have a bit of an on shore breeze so the beaches patchy fog could break up a bit. temperature in the 60s. the other extreme temperatures will reach 70-80 degrees. here's our forecast model showing you the fog. here we are at 8:00 and 9:00. a few left over patches near the coast. and into the afternoon hours this particular forecast kind of scales back a bit on the coverage. we could still have a few left over patches. forecast highs we will see a few 80s. oakland a forecast high of 73 degrees. san jose 76. and san francisco warming back up into the 60s. look ahead with your five-day forecast. a little cooler for thursday and friday. partly sunny by saturday.

we were talking about it and then i was gone he heard moaning he looked back and i disappeared. >> one of the friends jumped into the sink hole to help him climb out using a rope and ladder. he was taken to the hospital that he treated. a group of surfers going to court to try to regain access to a popular san mateo beach.

the case involves martin's beach. the beach was sold several years ago and ever since the new owner blocked the public from using the private road to the beach. he claims the gated road is in violation of the states coastal act. fire repairs may take a bit longer than expected. crews decided to rebuild the front porch of the damage. initially owner hoped to have it open in march but they have to push it back. hostess twinkies and snowballs could be back up on store shelves. hoho and dingdongs and dolly madison zingers would be part of the sale. pam are you excited? >> sure.

[ laughter ] yes. >> sorry to put you on the spot. 4:55 is the time. i don't want to bad mouth hostess but i opt for other snacks. >> one of the things that pam everything in moderation; right? occasionally it's good to have whatever you want. let's take a look at the commute now. northbound 101 and the westbound bay bridge. a lot of fog. in fact even has trouble choosing the cameras because it's so foggy out there. you can look up and for example we're trying to look at 880 in oakland. completely fogged in so we can't show that to you. the east shore freeway has poor visibility. let's move along and take a look at san francisco. moving in and out of here. northbound 101 is moderately heavy. on the maps i want to remind you there is a fatal crash.

they are still investigating that crash. southbound 101 the lanes are open but it may cause rubber necker delays if it's out this for too much longer. let's go back to mark. good morning, to you. you mentioned the fog it is floating around the coast and near parts of the bay. it will impact your visibility. temperatures off to a cold start this morning. the 40s and 50s. up above us we have a layer of warm air compressing that marine layer. as a result as it compresses it, it makes the dense fog bank. it will impact your visibility in the short term. right now a fog a factor on the coast side. a few patches into the bay. for the coast this morning areas of dense fog dragging highway one into the afternoon hours. partly cloudy. we could have a few left over patches. away from the shoreline the key headline here temperatures especially inland. look at this. warmest locations on track to reach the upper 70
